The last step in making the viol is varnishing it. Varnish is applied to the instrument to protect it from environmental influences. Once the varnishing is done, pegs are fitted; a tailpiece needs to be made to match the fingerboard. Then the bridge and the strings are fitted. The model shown is a Bertrand copy after the original owned by Wieland Kuijken. The neck is not a copy of the original, but most likely has English origins. |
